哈维尔?马里亚斯（1951- ），西班牙小说家、翻译家、专栏作家。1979年因翻译《项狄传》获得西班牙国家翻译奖。1992年出版《如此苍白的心》，英译版于1997年获得IMPAC都柏林国际文学奖。

马里亚斯生于马德里，童年有一段时期在美国度过。从马德里康普顿斯大学毕业后的六年内，他的兴趣转向文学翻译，先后把许多名作家的书翻译成西班牙语，这也成就了马里亚斯语言的多元性。

...There are many occasions on which a No is the only possible answer and such a No clarifies nothing, is useless. It's the answer one would get whether it was true or not. A Yes can be useful sometimes, but a No almost never, especially when the subject under discussion is something ugly or shameful or when it's a matter of getting what you want at all costs or of saving your skin. It's of no value in itself. Accepting it is an act of faith, and the faith is ours not that of the person saying No. Besides, faith is a fickle, fragile thing: it stumbles, recovers, grows stronger, cracks. And is lost. Belief can never be trusted.

...it's impossible to recover the inexperience of your experienced youth once you've moved on considerably; once you've understood something, it's impossible to not understand what you once didn't understand, ignorance doesn't return, not even when you want to describe a time during which you either basked in or were the victim of ignorance, and never trust anyone who tells you something with a falsely innocent look on his face, feigning the lost innocence of childhood or adolescence or youth, or who adopts the gaze — the icy, forzen gaze — of the child he no longer is, and the same is true of the old man who speaks out of the years of his maturity rather than out of the old age that now dominates his entire vision of the world, his knowledge of other people and of himself; even the dead —...

Something happened or didn't happen, and if it did happen, it did so in a certain way, that is how it took place. Notice that expression "to take place", which we use as a synonym of "happen" and "occur". It's curiously appropriate and exact, because that is precisely what happens with the truth, it has a place and there it stays; and it has a time and it stays there too. It remains locked up inside that time and place and there's no way we can undo that lock, we can't travel back to either time or place in order to get a glimpse of their contents. All we're left with are guesses and approximations, it becomes a matter of encircling the truth and trying to make out its shape in the distance or through veils and mists, but we never can, it's just a ridiculous waste of time...

When you're rejected by the main object of your love, it's easy to become filled with a general feeling of being surplus to requirements, to feel that any display of affection could be deemed bothersome or undesirable, that the quality of your love has somehow been downgraded and so should never be imposed on others without your first being invited to do so.

There are some things about which it's best just to have your suspicions, as long as these are not pressing or unbearable, rather than pursue some disappointing or painful certainty that...would oblige you to go on living, meanwhile having to tell yourself a different story from the one you had lived with up until then, always supposing it was possible to cancel out or replace what you had already lived. Or even cancel out or replace what you had believed, if you had believed it for a long time.

...unhappy people often insist on trying to uncover the full magnitude of their unhappiness, or choose to investigate other people's lives as a distraction from their own.
